PRILOSEC 20MG CAPSULE
Generic Name: OMEPRAZOLE (oh-MEPP-ruh-zole)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Prilosec

USES: This medication works by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It is used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, in the treatment of conditions such as the Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome where excessive stomach acid is produced, and in the treatment of erosive esophagitis.

In some instances, this medication may be prescribed for treatment of duodenal or gastric (stomach) ulcers, alone or added to antibiotics to help cure ulcers related to infection (H pylori)

HOW TO TAKE THIS MEDICATION: This medication works best if taken before eating. Antacids may be taken with this medication.

The capsules are sustained-release and must be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew them or the long action may be destroyed and the chance of side effects increased.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause diarrhea, constipation, stomach ache, nausea, gas, loss of appetite, headache or dizziness the first few days as your body adjusts to it. If these effects persist or become bothersome, inform your doctor.

Unlikely but tell your doctor if you develop back or joint pain, nervousness, sleep disturbances, cough, chest pain, unusual thirst, change in amount of urine or vision changes.

This medication may rarely cause loss of hair, ringing in the ears, swelling of stomach or fatigue.

In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing.

PRECAUTIONS: Before using this medication tell your doctor your medical history especially of liver or kidney disease or of any drug allergies.

This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this drug is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential for adverse effects for the infant, breast-feeding is not recommended while taking this drug. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before breast-feeding.

The elderly may be especially sensitive to this drug.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Before taking omeprazole, tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medications you are taking especially diazepam (Valium), warfarin(Coumadin), phenytoin (Dilantin), ketoconazole, ampicillin and iron.

MISSED DOSE: Take any missed dose as soon as possible but not if it is almost time for the next dose. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not "double up" the dose.

STORAGE: Store at room temperature and keep away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
